The History of Christmas and Toys: Magic and Tradition

Dec 21, 2024

Christmas as we know it today—filled with toys, twinkling lights, and Santa’s hearty “Ho, Ho, Ho”—wasn’t always such a festive celebration. Its evolution from a modest religious holiday to a season of giving is a fascinating journey, and toys have played a surprisingly significant role in shaping that transformation.

When Christmas Was About Simplicity

Centuries ago, Christmas was primarily a solemn occasion marked by church services and modest feasts. In early Christian Europe, gifts weren’t exchanged on Christmas Day but rather on December 6th, St. Nicholas’ feast day. Saint Nicholas, a 4th-century bishop known for his generosity, became the inspiration for the modern Santa Claus. He was said to secretly leave coins or small gifts in shoes, sparking the idea of gifting as part of the holiday season.

As the centuries rolled on, Christmas evolved. By the 19th century, it began morphing into a family-centered celebration. The Victorians were especially instrumental in turning Christmas into a warm, festive occasion. Trees were decorated, carols were sung, and the tradition of exchanging gifts started gaining traction. This was also the period when toys began appearing under the tree—a trend tied closely to the rise of Santa Claus as a central figure.

Enter Santa Claus: The Jolly Gift-Giver

The modern image of Santa Claus owes much to Clement Clarke Moore’s 1823 poem A Visit from St. Nicholas (commonly known as ‘Twas the Night Before Christmas). Moore’s depiction of a plump, cheerful man delivering toys in a sleigh captured imaginations and helped solidify the idea of Santa as a giver of gifts.

Fast forward to the 20th century, and Santa’s image became unmistakable, thanks in part to artists like Haddon Sundblom, who painted the iconic Coca-Cola Santa in the 1930s. By this time, Santa was firmly associated with toys, and Christmas became a commercial powerhouse, with children eagerly writing wish lists and parents scrambling to find the season’s hottest gifts.

The Growth of the Toy Tradition

Toys have always carried a special kind of magic during Christmas. In the late 19th century, toys were often handmade and simple, such as wooden dolls, trains, or puzzles. The Industrial Revolution changed everything. Factories made toys more affordable and accessible, transforming Christmas into a wonderland for children.

By the mid-20th century, Christmas morning had become synonymous with excitement and surprise, with toys like the Slinky, LEGO, and Barbie dominating wish lists. The concept of the “must-have toy” started taking hold in the 1980s, with phenomena like Cabbage Patch Kids leading to frenzied shopping sprees. More recently, toys like Hatchimals and LOL Surprise Dolls have carried on the tradition of being the “it” item of the year.

The Toy Stories We Love

Pop culture has done its fair share to reinforce the connection between Christmas and toys. Consider the timeless magic of The Nutcracker, where toys come to life in a Christmas Eve fantasy. Or the comedic chaos of Jingle All the Way, where a father’s quest for a Turbo Man action figure mirrors the real-life toy crazes of the holiday season.

And who could forget Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer? While not specifically about toys, the classic stop-motion film by Rankin/Bass introduced the Island of Misfit Toys, highlighting how toys—even imperfect ones—carry deep emotional significance.

Why Toys Matter at Christmas

At its heart, the tradition of giving toys at Christmas is about more than just material things. It’s about joy, imagination, and connection. For children, toys symbolize possibility—a way to dream, create, and explore. For adults, the act of giving toys is a chance to relive the wonder of their own childhood and pass that magic on.

In many ways, toys have become the storytellers of Christmas. Each one—from a cherished teddy bear to a high-tech gadget—has its own tale to tell, weaving together memories of family, love, and the enduring spirit of the season.

The Tradition Continues

As you gather around the tree this year, take a moment to reflect on the history behind the brightly wrapped packages. From St. Nicholas’ coins to the latest must-have gadget, they remind us of the magic of a TOY!

And who knows? The toy you give this year might just become part of someone’s Christmas story for generations to come.
